Wonderful Netflix series of six long episodes. It deals with the founders of Spotify: Daniel Ek & Martin Lorentzon, the team behind it, all the stakeholders in this endeavor, and the challenges and fun occurring during the time of creation in Sweden. No matter how big or modest this Tv show is, in terms of budget, actors’ notoriety, and shooting places and techniques, the creativity and the approach are well suited for the whole project making the coherence undeniable inside the episode and creating a fluidity in moving from one “theme” of an episode to another. The first episode is about the Swedish founder who is portrayed as a brilliant INTJ. It was amazing to see the passion and dedication to creating this new platform. His personal life is also depicted and presented like it’s his version of the story. He goes through struggles during the period before launching Spotify, but he’s determined to engage fully until the end of the tunnel, if there is one. The second episode focuses on the CEO of Sony in Sweden. He is traditional but values creativity in music and cares a lot about artists and their creations. He’s living in the period of the rise of Pirate Bay and music being downloaded by a massive number of people using this “grey zone” website. As an ESTJ, he is torn between his second and third mental processes. Introverted Si pushes him to preserve the status quo and keep the music industry alive with the same procedures. On the other hand, extraverted intuition Ne is looking for a new solution to the music industry crisis, especially in Sweden. So he tries to follow orders from Sony headquarters: to fire people that he didn’t want to fire and fight against Pirate Bay and anyone who wants to offer music for free. He’s determined to crush Pirate Bay. So when the founder of Spotify pitched his business model, his Si and mindset couldn’t accept the change presented but his colleague convinced him to listen, and he ended up loving the technical capabilities of the platform.

Spotify was founded by Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon. While it’s difficult to definitively assign a single “personality type” to individuals, especially complex ones like successful entrepreneurs, we can glean some insights from their public statements and the company’s history.

Daniel Ek:

  • Introverted and Analytical: Ek has described himself as an introvert. He’s known for being thoughtful, strategic, and analytical, focusing on problem-solving and long-term vision. He once stated, “I’m still not a very good presenter. A lot of business leaders are way more charismatic than I am. I’m an introvert.”
  • Persistent and Resilient: He faced numerous challenges in building Spotify, particularly in negotiating with music labels. His persistence and resilience in the face of these obstacles were crucial to Spotify’s success.
  • Visionary and Unconventional: Ek’s vision for Spotify was to create a legal alternative to piracy that was “better than piracy.” This required an unconventional approach to the music industry at the time. He also resonates with George Bernard Shaw’s quote: “The reasonable man adapts himself to the world. The unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.”
  • Empathetic and Self-Aware (as a leader): Despite his introverted nature, he recognized the importance of his leadership and how his mood could affect his team. He actively worked on improving his communication and leadership skills, showing a strong degree of self-awareness and a willingness to grow.

Martin Lorentzon:

  • Entrepreneurial and “Punk” Spirit: Lorentzon was already a co-founder of Tradedoubler (a digital marketing company) before Spotify. Daniel Ek has described him and Lorentzon as “punks” when they started Spotify, suggesting a rebellious, disruptive, and innovative mindset.
  • Strategic and Collaborative: While less publicly vocal than Ek, Lorentzon played a crucial role in the early development and strategy of Spotify. His prior experience in online advertising likely provided valuable insights for Spotify’s business model.

In essence, the creators of Spotify exhibit traits commonly found in successful innovators and disruptors: a blend of vision, persistence, adaptability, strong problem-solving skills, and a willingness to challenge the status quo. They were driven by a clear understanding of a market need (legal music streaming) and a determination to create a superior solution.
